Daniel se narodil v Bostonu 7. ledna 1908. Jeho první známou písní byla „What Would People Say“, kterou vydalo Decca Records v roce 1938. Během několika následujících desetiletí se stal významným písničkářem a skladatelem pro filmový i televizní průmysl. Pro film složil skladby pro Two Tickets to Broadway, Belles on Their Toes, Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Bloodhounds of Broadway, Yesterday and Today, The I Don’t Care Girl, Man in the Attic a Golden Girl, kde byl nominován na svou druhou cenu Akademie s písní „Never“.
Mezi jeho další významné písně patří „Here Comes Love Again“, „The Queen of the Gypsies“, „Just Let Me Love You“, „Bye Low“, „Sunday Morning“, „Montparnasse“, „You’re In Love“, „A Little Girl from Little Rock“ a „Bluebirds Keep Singin’ in the Rain“.
Daniel zemřel 6. prosince 1997 v Placerville v Kalifornii.
